Homemade Gyros with Greek Salad

Pita bread slices with gyro meat and greek salad

For the Gyros:


  • 1 lb (450g) of thinly sliced lamb or chicken (your choice)

  • 4 pita bread rounds

  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 tsp dried oregano

  • 1 tsp ground cumin

  • 1 tsp paprika

  • 2 tbsp olive oil

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

  • Tzatziki sauce (store-bought or homemade, for serving)


  1. In a bowl, combine the minced garlic, dried oregano, ground cumin, paprika, olive oil, salt, and pepper. Mix well to create a marinade.

  2. Add the thinly sliced lamb or chicken to the marinade and coat evenly. Let it marinate in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes, or ideally, a few hours.

  3. Heat a grill or grill pan over medium-high heat. Grill the marinated meat slices until fully cooked and slightly charred, about 3-4 minutes per side for lamb, and 5-6 minutes per side for chicken.

  4. While grilling the meat, warm the pita bread rounds on the grill for about 1 minute per side.

  5. Remove the meat from the grill and let it rest for a few minutes. Then, thinly slice it.

  6. To assemble gyros, place a few slices of grilled meat on each pita bread round, top with sliced onions, and drizzle with tzatziki sauce. Roll up the pita, securing it with foil or parchment paper.

For the Greek Salad:


  • 2 large tomatoes, diced

  • 1 cucumber, diced

  • 1 red onion, thinly sliced

  • 1 green bell pepper, diced

  • 1/2 cup Kalamata olives, pitted

  • 1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese

  • 2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil

  • 1 tbsp red wine vinegar

  • 1 tsp dried oregano

  • Salt and pepper, to taste


  1. In a large bowl, combine the diced tomatoes, cucumber, red onion, green bell pepper, and Kalamata olives.

  2. In a small bowl, whisk together the olive oil, red wine vinegar, dried oregano, salt, and pepper.

  3. Pour the dressing over the salad and toss to coat.

  4. Sprinkle the crumbled feta cheese over the top and serve.
