Southern Crispy Delight: Buttermilk Bliss Fried Chicken

Fried chicken in a white bowl with a grey background

Ingredients:

  • 1 whole chicken, cut into pieces (or your preferred chicken parts)

  • 2 cups buttermilk

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour (can use all-purpose gluten free as well)

  • 1 tablespoon salt

  • 1 tablespoon black pepper

  • 1 tablespoon paprika

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

  • 1 teaspoon onion powder

  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions:

  1. Place the chicken pieces in a large bowl and cover them with buttermilk. Make sure all the chicken pieces are submerged. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or overnight for best results. This step helps tenderize the chicken and adds flavor.

  2. In a shallow dish or large resealable plastic bag, combine the all-purpose flour, salt, pepper, paprika, garlic powder, and onion powder. Mix well to combine all the spices.

  3. Remove the marinated chicken from the refrigerator and allow it to come to room temperature for about 30 minutes.

  4. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat until it reaches about 350°F (175°C).

  5. While the oil is heating, dredge each piece of chicken in the seasoned flour mixture, making sure to coat it thoroughly. Shake off any excess flour.

  6. Carefully place the coated chicken pieces in the hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Fry the chicken in batches if necessary to ensure even cooking.

  7. Fry the chicken pieces for about 15-20 minutes, turning occasionally, until they are golden brown and cooked through. The internal temperature of the chicken should reach 165°F (75°C).

  8. Once cooked, transfer the fried chicken to a wire rack or paper towels to drain any excess oil.

  9. Serve the buttermilk fried chicken hot, alongside your favorite sides like mashed potatoes, coleslaw, or biscuits.
